Nazia was very young when her father died. Her mother was ill and unable to provide for her family. Since Nazia was the oldest amongst her siblings, it became her responsibility to provide for her family. Nazia had big dreams of becoming a doctor when she grew up. Her dreams seemed impossible to reach as her relatives and neighbors tried to convince her mother that Nazia’s priorities should be focused on caring for her family, not on getting an education. The Ottawa Chapter of DIL Canada hosted its Annual Fundraiser Gala on Sunday, October 30th, 2016 at St. Elias Conference & Banquet Centre. More than 250 people joined us to celebrate and benefit the important work being done every day by DIL schools in Pakistan. The event included exquisite entertainment and fine dining.

DIL Student Awarded President’s Gold Medal by Pakistan Boy Scouts Association

This past December, DIL-NOWA school student Zamin Raza Mangi was awarded the President's Gold Medal by the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association. The President of Pakistan presented the award at the Presidency in Islamabad. Held every four years, the competition tests participants on both mental and physical capabilities. Ten-year-old Zamin competed against participants from 24 Sindh districts, and was awarded the title of “Best Shaheen Scout of Sindh” for the year 2015. Over summer 2015, 1314 9th graders from 325 schools across Pakistan participated in an online learning challenge, Learn Smart Pakistan, arranged by Knowledge Platform.

DIL’s Curriculum Director, Annie Field, and Program Development Director, Brenda Erlinger, are headed to Pakistan for their bi-annual trip in April. Annie, DIL US’s longest serving employee, is most looking forward to connecting with the team face-to-face on projects and seeing the impact our work has made in the field. “It’s always productive to be in the field together sharing our observations and collaborating as a team on how best to tackle new challenges that arise.” During the trip, Annie will review curriculum revision plans with English teachers and observe the newly implemented curriculum guides for science and KG.
